The Crowning Moment

In a perfect world, the baby’s head is down and comes out before anything else. As the heaviest part of the infant’s body, nature aligns the head so gravity can lend birth a hand. It’s a very tight squeeze to get that head through the cervical opening and birth canal, so the baby usually turns her head to fit.

Nature also makes her skull flexible and squishy, so it can fit through. That’s why some babies seem to have slightly “pointy” skulls when they’re born. (Please don’t call her “Conehead.” It doesn’t last.)

There can be lots of time between crowning (when the top of her head appears) and actual birth, so it may feel like you’re stalled. Be patient. Eventually, things progress.

The person delivering the baby will either coax the rest of the head out, or just wait for it to drop into his hands. After that, mom, baby, and delivery person conspire to wriggle the shoulders out. The remaining, narrower body parts easily slide down the path that the head so considerately plowed. Drum roll, please: you have yourselves a baby.
